Pathway from student to teacher

Rosie Carter, Writing Center Educational Assistant, never thought that being laid off could be good. Yet, through the experience she found a career helping those in similar situations - having no job and needing to return to school after being in the workforce. (0) comments

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) are two of MATC's prestigious honor societies. On November 21, 2008, both of these societies held a reception, inducting new members. All of these students will be nationally recognized and will graduate with honors. (0) comments

Volunteering produces green thumbs

An interest in geology became a study in landscaping for Andy Heinowski. Heinowski was a Geology student at MATC in 2009 and later transferred to UW-Milwaukee. After a chance meeting, Mark Bocek, West Allis Campus maintenance staff, and Heinowski later discovered a common desire to use landscaping and volunteerism as a means of therapy. (0) comments

Student government is an advocate for the MATC student. Senates of all four campuses are often called upon to settle a difference of opinion between faculty and a member of the student body. Only suggestions from the senate can be made to the college administration. (0) comments

Open Mic shows off local talent

As soon as you walk into the Open Mic event, the sweet sounds of poetry capture your ear immediately. Cut Open, Surrender, Life's Application, and Weak Knock are some of the titles of these artistic presentations. Envision a word, a phrase, a metaphor, if you will, stretch it to the limit, and this is what you get. (0) comments

Latino Student Organization pursues diversity

Eddie Perez, President of the Latino Student Organization (LSO), joined the LSO last semester. He stated at one of his board meetings that his mission "is to diversify everything, not just have it Latino's, Blacks and Asians all separated. "I don't want that. (0) comments

Walk Against Poverty

The fourth annual Walk Against Poverty event was hosted by the Americorps Vista organization. More than 100 participated in the mile-and-one-half trek through the downtown Milwaukee area with the cold weather and stabbing winds. The marchers warmed up later with a treat of soup and hot chocolate. (0) comments

Spheres of Proud Achievement in Reading for Kids creates the acronym SPARKS. But this program is much more than letters and words; it's the actions of the instructors and the effort the students produce. The SPARKS program focuses on students in kindergarten and grades 1 through 3 who are struggling with reading. (0) comments
